“Small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.”
This quote by John C Maxwell is one of my favorites and only now after looking backwards can I truly see how true this statement is.
We live in a ‘now’ society. We know what we want and we want it now! We place an order online, we want it delivered today. We want food and who has the time to actually go out and wait in the store, so we use Uber Eats. It’s the same with a new diet or a new PR. We want results and we want them now. This ‘now’ attitude is a major cause of unrealized dreams and potentials. When we don’t see the results or new PR’s today or tomorrow, we give up when in reality it’s ‘small disciplines’ or small actions performed with consistency that lead to BIG results over time.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not a talented or gifted athlete. I’ve just never given up. I ran my first marathon at age 19 with a time of 4:03 and it took me over 15 years to run a sub-3 hour marathon. It was almost 20 years after my first marathon that I qualified for the OlympicTrials in the marathon.. 20 YEARS! It didn’t happen suddenly. It didn’t happen overnight, in a month, or even a year.. it took 20+ years of training consistently to qualify for the Olympic Trials. Only now, I can look back and see that all I have achieved so far has been the result of consistent effort.
Read the quote again at the top. Your next PR or achieved goal happens with small efforts repeated DAILY. Too often, we fall into the trap of cramming. We skip a few days and try to cram all the work into one day. We eat terribly for a weekend so let’s fast and skip meals for an entire day. We skip a few workouts for the week so let’s do them all in one day. NO! The results we want will only come with daily efforts repeated with consistency. I know some days are tough to make it all happen- but do something to achieve your goal, no matter how small, but do it daily.
When it comes to our health and fitness, there isn’t a lottery. Great achievements happen over TIME not overnight. Great achievements are not just luck. They are the results of ‘small disciplines repeated with consistency every day’.
Whether you’re faltering with your New Year goals or not seeing the results quick enough from your long term goals. Stick with it! Make consistency part of your routine in achieving your goals.
Your dreams are on the other side of consistency.
You got this! I believe in you!
