70% of Runners Make This Mistake

70% of Runners make this mistake…. They fail to plan!

According to a recent survey, a staggering 70% of runners fail to plan their training. Instead, they rely on the approach of simply running more.

Can you imagine if you tackled every goal with this approach? What if it was your retirement plan? Could you imagine trusting your retirement to a strategy that was just ‘save more’? I know, you might be thinking, well, that’s my retirement, there’s no way I’d leave that to chance, right?

What about something as simple as driving to a new location in the city you live? Do you not quickly type in the address in GPS to find the quickest and most efficient route? Without GPS, you can probably arrive at your destination, but how many wrong turns, traffic jams, etc. will you encounter along the way? Without a plan or GPS, you’ll lose valuable time and can even get lost.

Every goal we aspire for deserves to be treated with a plan.Training for a race is no different. Why do most people leave their training to chance when having a plan will unlock untapped potential? Sure, you might be able to cross the finish line by simply running more for your training. But, as my dad used to say “Anything worth doing is worth doing well”.

Here are the top reasons for following a training plan for your next race of any distance:

·     Takes the guesswork out of training. No more wondering what you’re going to do for your workout, how many miles to run, at what paces, etc.

·     Prevent and reduce injuries. Having a plan will incorporate the right balance of increasing mileage with recovery days along with planning out strength, mobility, and cross-training so you can optimize your training and unlock more of your potential.

·     Keeps you motivated. You’re going to have tough days. You’re going to have speed work on days you don’t want to do it or long runs on days you’re feeling sluggish. Having a plan in place is like an accountability partner to help keep you on track for race day.

·     See progress. Following a plan helps you see and measure progress. And seeing progress provides more fuel to help you tackle your training and goals.

·     Dis-Comfort Zone: Just running more or not following a plan will generally keep us in our comfort zone. We have a harder time pushing ourselves outside our comfort zone when left to our own desires.Growth and progress happen outside our comfort zone- which is our Dis-ComfortZone. Following a plan forces us into the Dis-Comfort Zone where we will see more growth.

In conclusion, planning is crucial for runners to achieve their goals and enjoy sustainable success. Instead of relying on the "just run more"approach, taking the time to find and follow a detailed training plan can help set specific goals, prevent injuries, keep you motivated, and incorporate a variety of training techniques into your routine. So, the next time you lace up your shoes, remember the importance of planning and take the time to find and follow a customized training plan.

P.S.

It’s funny how we will spend hours researching shoes, nutrition, or which race outfit we want to buy for race day. And spend HUNDREDS of dollars on apparel, shoes, nutrition, supplements, and race registration fees. BUT 70% won’t pay a fraction of the price  for a plan or hire a coach which will make them faster than any pair of shoes or pre-workout will do for them. #foodforthought
